Children's homes

Residential Care for Children/Children's Homes are there to ensure that the needs of children are met when they cannot live with their own family. They are a place for children to develop and grow, as well as providing food, shelter, and space for play and leisure in a caring environment. Children's Homes look after children with many different needs. Residential care for children in Knowsley have been designed to offer the best possible quality to those children who are looked after.

We currently have five units, which are located within the local communities of Knowsley. Four of the units are houses which accommodate two young people who, for a period of time, cannot reside with their natural or an alternative family. Two houses are situated in the Kirkby area, one is in Huyton and the fourth is in the Halewood area.

The service offered is accessible and flexible to meet the needs of children, aged 11-16, who the team have assessed as being in need of residential accommodation. If a young person has been ‘looked after’ by the unit six months prior to their sixteenth birthday, a placement will continue to be offered, if required, until completion of their academic year or until their sixteenth birthday, whichever is most appropriate.

The service also has a pre-independence unit that is located in the Prescot area of the borough. This unit provides accommodation for four young people of mixed sexes aged 15 ¾ to 18 years old. Young people must be within three months of their final year in secondary education.

All admissions will be part of a planned process, which will follow an assessment of need undertaken in conjunction with the young person, social worker and residential staff.
