Visual impairment

Visual impairment is a term used to cover a variety of sight problems. If you lose your sight or have visual problems such as tunnel or blurred vision, you will want to make sure you know about what help is available. As a result of visual impairment, you may experience difficulties with the following:

  • Telling the time
  • Using the telephone
  • Making a hot drink
  • Seeing bus numbers
  • Bumping into objects
If you are experiencing any of the above, then you need to contact your GP who may need to refer you to an eye specialist at the local hospital.

If you do have sight problems, you will receive a BD8 form which registers you as being either partially sighted or blind.

What help can social services offer me once I am registered as blind/partially sighted?

An assessment of your needs will be carried out and a personal plan devised.

You will also receive advice on assisted ways of travel such as guide dogs and how to move around safely indoors and outside.

Learning to read Braille / Moon and using a typewriter will also be part of your rehabilitation in addition to independant living skills such as carrying out household tasks like cooking and shopping etc.

When a person has a number of these needs, it may be beneficial for them to have met them within the environment of the training centre at Christopher Grange. The centre provides advice and training in all areas of sight loss. Access to this service can be gained through a care management assessment. Visit their website for further information.
