Access Tools

The Children with Disabilities Team covers the whole borough. It will provide assessment, advice and support. The team has two specialist posts – one for the under five’s and another to cover the transition years. There is a health visitor based in the team.

Knowsley Council has a variety of dedicated services for children with disabilities and their families:

• Childrens Outreach and Residential Disability Service – this provides short breaks for children and young people aged 7-18 years in a comfortable and well equipped four bedroomed bungalow.
• Outreach workers offer support in the home and the community to children and young people aged 7 – 18 years by assisting access to local youth clubs, voluntary groups, outdoor activities and group work.
• Home Service Scheme – this gives children with disabilities the opportunity to have regular short breaks with a family in their own community. It gives children the chance to make new friends, enjoy different activities and learn to be more independent. It also gives parents a chance to recharge their batteries and give individual attention to other members of the family.
• Family Centres – these provide specific and additional services for children with disability, for example, sensory rooms.

Certain criteria must be met for access to these services:

• A child has substantial degree of sensory impairment / physical disability
• A child has a severe learning disability as defined in their education statement
• A child has a chronic and life threatening/life limiting illness
• A child has multiple disabilities which impact on family functioning
• There is more than one child in the family who has a disability.
