The council provides advice and support for adult carers who look after the elderly, children with special needs and adults with physical or learning disabilities, mental health and substance misuse problems.

What is an adult carer?

If you provide help, without payment, to a friend, neighbour or relative who is frail, disabled or mentally or physically ill and needs support with everyday living, you are classed as a carer. You do not need to live in the same house or be a relative to be classed as a carer.

Help and support

As a carer, you are entitled to receive a carers assessment, which may lead to additional help and support from the council.  Even if the person you are caring for doesn’t access services, it doesn’t mean that you can’t.

In some cases, it may be possible for you to receive direct payments, to allow you to organise your own service. The outcome of the main and carers assessment will be taken into account when deciding which services you may be entitled to receive.
