If you provide care on a regular basis to a person aged 18 or over you are entitled to receive a carers assessment.

Parents of disabled children will usually receive a family assessment and should not expect a separate carers assessment.

What does the assessment involve?

The assessment is a chance for you to describe what you need to help you care for your relative or friend.  It is important that you think about what difficulties you have and what services might help. It may include:

  • Tasks you would like help with
  • Other responsibilities you have such as work, education, family and child care commitments
  • Your financial situation, in order to identify your benefit entitlement as a carer
  • Your partner’s financial situation, if they are under your care
  • To consider whether you work or wishes to work
  • Wishes to undertake education, training or leisure activity
  • The impact that their caring role might have

Usually, the carers assessment is carried out at the same time as they assess the person you are caring for.  However, if you would prefer a private discussion, we can arrange this.
