Who are we?

The Directorate of Children and Family Services serves both the children, young people and families of Knowsley.

Our aim is to ensure that children and young people in Knowsley get the best possible start in life and together with our partners to enable them to be healthy, safe and valued and to encourage them to make the most of learning opportunities, appreciate their environment and make a positive contribution to their communities.

The directorate delivers a range of services from universal provision such as children’s centres and youth services, to services for those children and young people who may have additional needs and need more specialist services.

Why do we need people’s personal information?

We need your information to:

  • Create an accurate record for you
  • Make sure we have the right information when you access a service
  • Help staff review the services they provide to ensure they are of the highest standard, and carry out research and audit to improve services for you

The council also needs this information to help it:

  • Manage services effectively
  • Account for its actions
  • Plan for the future

The council also will use information about its school workforce for research and statistical purposes, and to evaluate and develop education policy and strategies.  The statistics are used in such a way that individual staff cannot be indentified from them.  The council may also use it to support and monitor schools regarding sickness and recruitment of staff.

What we do with people’s personal information

The council will use information about children and families for whom it provides services, to enable it to carry out specific functions for which it is responsible, such as the assessment of any special educational needs the child may have.

What information we share with others

Information such as your contact details, national curriculum assessments, attendance information, characteristics such as ethnic group, special educational needs are shared within the council to help improve services.

We will not share your information with anyone outside the council unless the law and our rules permit it.

Who do we share with?

We are required by law to pass some of your information to the Department for Education (DfE). If you require more information about how the DfE store and use this data please visit the Department for Education website.

Wellbeing

We are also required by law to support co-operation between partners to promote the wellbeing of children and young people.

In schools we provide wellbeing services in partnership with NHS Knowsley and other health providers such as KIPS.

To enable these health & wellbeing providers to deliver individual services for our pupils we must share information such as surname, forename, date of birth and also home address with them.

Youth support services

For pupils aged 13 years and over, the school is legally required to pass on certain information to the provider of youth support services in their area. This is the local authority support service for young people aged 13 to 19 in England. The school must provide the name and address of the pupil and their parents and any further information relevant to the support services' role. In addition, the date of birth of the pupil is supplied.

Until pupils are aged 16 or older, their parent(s) can ask that no information beyond their children’s name, address and date of birth (and their own name and address) be passed to the youth support services provider. This right transfers to the pupil on their 16th birthday. Pupils or parents will need to inform the school if this is what they wish.

When and how do we dispose information?

The directorate only holds information as long as it is needed and then disposes of it securely.  This ensures that personal information is not kept for longer than necessary.

How do we safeguard information?

The directorate holds information in the most secure manner possible.  This stops unauthorised access to personal information.

How can you check what information is held about you
