Documents and resources for governors - Instruments of
Government
What is an instrument of Government
The Instrument of Government is the document that records the
name of the school and the constitution (make up) of its governing
body. The governing body can review and change the instrument at
any time.
Changing an Instrument of Government
We want to change our instrument - what do we
do?
Step 1
The school must
send to the Governor Support Service a copy of the governing body
minutes which approves the amendments to the Instrument of
Government (which includes the documenting within the minutes
details of any sponsoring bodies to be represented by any Sponsor
Governor allocations) to seek the approval of the Executive
Director of Children and Family Services.
Step 2
The Governor Support Service will
check that the Instrument of Government complies with the
requirements contained in the relevant Governance Regulations, in
particular the required ratios of governor representation.
Step 3
The Governor Support Service will seek
the approval of the Executive Director of Children and Family
Services, in consultation with the Cabinet member with Portfolio
responsibility for Children and Family Services, to the proposed
amendments to the Instrument of Government.
Step 4
The Instrument of Government will be
forwarded to Borough’s Legal Department to be formally sealed upon
the Directorate of Children and Family Services written
recommendation.
Step 5
The Legal Department will return the
sealed copy of the Instrument of Government to the Governor Support
Service
Step 6
The Governor Support Service
will send a copy of the sealed Instrument of Government to the
school with a request that a copy is circulated to each
member of the governing body.
