Sustainable development

Countries across the world have agreed that we can only have a better quality of life and future for our children if we tackle social, economic and environmental problems together. This is the concept of Sustainable Development.

At a world level, the United Nations describe sustainable development as 'meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs' [Bruntland Commission].

To progress social, economic and environmental issues we have to accept that a certain amount of development is necessary. But to be sustainable we must make sure that the progress we make - and the way in which we develop - can be continued in the long term.

How does this affect Knowsley?

Everyone in Knowsley has a part to play in achieving sustainable development - individuals, local communities, businesses, local and national governments.

Currently, Knowsley Council and the Local Strategic Partnership are preparing a new Sustainable Community Strategy for Knowsley, which will give greater emphasis to sustainable development objectives. The strategy will set the long term vision and priorities for the area, balancing our economic, social and environmental goals.
