Restoration of historic milestones, crosses and landmarks
Having secured a Heritage Lottery fund bid in 2006 for the restoration of some of the historic milestones, crosses and landmarks around Knowsley, the historic crosses and milestone have now been cleaned and restored.
We are now looking towards getting interpretation features on the eight sites and have been awarded a further £177,000 Heritage Lottery funding for this two year project. We aim to house an exhibition of the projects in five of the boroughs libraries, 3 heritage evenings and we are also in the process of producing a booklet for pupils who took part in the historic workshops.
The artefacts we have been restoring are below:
- Roby cross, Huyton
- Weeping stone, Kirkby
- St Chads cross, Kirkby
- Cronton cross, Cronton
- Huyton cross, Huyton
- Milestone, Liverpool Road, Huyton
- Pigeon house, Dovecot, Kirkby
- Cronton stocks, Cronton
We encourage you to visit these artefacts for their historical value.
