Dog warden service

The Knowsley Dog Wardens Service is here to support responsible dog ownership and ensure that dogs do not become a nuisance.

In particular, the service aims to deal with problems caused by the main symptoms of irresponsible dog ownership such as:

  • Dog fouling
  • Straying dogs

Support and Advice

Our main purpose is to provide dog owners with the advice and information needed to ensure that potential problems don't occur in the first place. Available support and advice includes:

  • Advice on the practicalities of dog ownership.
  • Reuniting you with your dog if it goes missing.
  • Promoting dog neutering and spaying (working in partnership with other agencies).
  • Distributing free dog fouling bags from all the Borough's public buildings.

Enforcement

Our first choice is always to support dog-owners to be responsible. However, wardens are also responsible for enforcing the Council's by-laws relating to dogs.

Dog wardens regularly patrol areas used by dog walkers. If you do not clean up after your dog you will be liable to a £75 fixed penalty and potentially a £1000 fine should you go to court.

Dog fouling is unsightly, unpleasant and dangerous. Dog faeces can cause an infection called toxicara canis, which can cause blindness in young children. Dog fouling can also stop people enjoying public areas across our Borough.

What we can't do

Dog wardens have no powers to deal with either dangerous or neglected dogs. In these circumstances, other appropriate agencies such as the Police and the RSPCA should be contacted.
