Truancy

Many youngsters who do not always go to school may regret it later. Getting a job, earning a living, enjoying life, can all be harder if a young person leaves school with very little to show for it. By being out on the streets young people risk becoming victims of crime as well as turning to crime themselves.

There can be many reasons why children are not in school:

  • Bullying
  • Fear of failure
  • Finding the work difficult
  • Boredom
  • Pressure from friends / family problems
The School Attendance Service can offer help and support to students and parents if children are ‘bunking off’ school.

Look out for the following signs if you suspect your child is not at school:

  • School letters about events etc
  • Questions about your plans / where you are going to be
  • A keen interest in getting to the post first
  • Talking about daytime TV programmes
  • Friends who are often absent from school
  • Frequently feeling ill

Unacceptable reasons for absence:

  • Shopping
  • Birthday treats
  • Looking after others at home
  • Non-urgent medical or dental appointments
The longer a child is away from school, the harder it is for them to go back. Parents can help by:

  • Taking an interest in your child’s work at school
  • Let the school know when and why your child will be absent
  • Go into school and become involved in activities for parents
  • Be aware of signs that your child may not be going to school
  • Contact the school or the school attendance service if you think your child is skipping school
