Teenage pregnancy

The Social Exclusion Report on Teenage Pregnancy (June 99) stated that Britain had the worst record of teenage pregnancies in Europe with approximately 90,000 teenagers becoming pregnant every year, the worst in the poorest areas. The report highlighted two main goals:

  • Reduce the rate of teenage conceptions, with the specific aim of halving the rate of conceptions among the 18s by 2010
  • Getting more teenage parents into education, training or employment, to reduce the risk of long term social exclusion.
In addition to a National Action Plan being developed, a cross-government Teenage Pregnancy Unit was set up to implement the report.

Knowsley Teenage Pregnancy Strategy

Although rates in Knowsley have been declining steadily in recent years, the borough developed a ten year strategy and action plan, in line with the governments requirements. The action plan is monitored and revised annually.

Knowsley Teenage Conception Rates

An analysis of three year rolling averages shows that Knowsley’s under 18 conception rate has fallen by 5% between 1996-98 and 1999-01. However, since the baseline figures from 1998 until 2001, Knowsley’s rate of under 18 conceptions has fallen by nearly 20%.

The targets set by the Teenage Pregnancy Unit for Knowsley are:

  • Reduce under 18 conception rate from 1998-2004 by 15%
  • Reduce under 18 conception rate from 1998-2010 by 50%
