Independent students

As an independent student, you are entitled to help with fees. You are an independent student if you meet one of the following conditions:

  • You are 25 or over before the start of the academic year for which you are applying
  • You were married before the start of the academic year for which you are applying
  • You have supported yourself for at least three years before the start of your course. This includes any time you:
  1. Were in paid employment
  2. Received Income Support or Job seekers Allowance or were registered for employment
  3. Received incapacity benefits, invalidity pension or maternity allowance
  4. Received training under any scheme for the unemployed or other funding by any state authority
  5. Could not support yourself out of earnings because you had to care for a person under 18 who is dependent on you
  • You have the care of a child or children on the first day of the academic year for which you are applying for support
  • You have no living parents
  • You are permanently estranged from your parents
  • You are in the care of the Local Authority or voluntary organisation.
