Education maintenance allowance

Education Maintenance Allowance is weekly payment of up to £30 paid directly to young people who stay in further education after they reach statutory leaving age (i.e. after school year 11). Young people may also receive bonus payments of £100 if they remain on their course and make good progress with the learning.

You can get an Education Maintenance Allowance if:

  • you are aged 16-18 and resident in Knowsley (other age conditions apply to students elsewhere)
  • your parents' household income is £30,000 or below
  • you are on a further education course in a school sixth form, sixth form college or FE college
You must attend all your course sessions and sign and EMA contract with your school or college.

For further information and an application pack, contact the EMA Helpline on 0808 1016219 or visit the DfES Education Maintenance Allowance website (see related links below).
