Disabled student allowance

Full time students, part time students and post-graduate students can receive help with the extra costs incurred as a result of attending a course and as a direct result of a disability. The allowances for full time students are as follows:

  • A specialist equipment allowance of up to £5,030 for the duration of the course.
  • A non-medical helpers allowance up to £20,000 each year.
  • A general disabled students' allowance of up to £1,680 each year.
  • Extra travel costs you have to pay as a result of your disability (not for everyday travel costs).

Part time and postgraduate students

If you are studying a part time undergraduate course or a full or part time post graduate course, you may also be entitled to some support from the Disabled Students Allowance scheme. Contact us for more information.

If you are physically disabled, or have mental-health difficulties, you will need to provide medical proof of your health problems.

If you have a specific learning difficulty (for example, dyslexia) we will need evidence of your dyslexia from a qualified psychologist or from someone with a qualification from a professional training course involving assessing adults with dyslexia.

We cannot pay for the cost of diagnosing your disability.

Contact us for further information and application form. If you prefer, you can download the application form from the DfES forms and guides website below.

You can also contact us using the details below if you would like a copy of 'Bridging the Gap', a guide to disabled student allowance. This is also available in Braille and audio-tape. You can also obtain a copy by calling the DfES information line on 0800 731 9133 or text phone 0800 328 8988.
