Financial support for continuing students
This section gives details of the help
available to full time 'old system'
students who started their course
before September 2006.
Tuition Fees
If you are an 'old system' student, you will be charged tuition fees of up to £1,255. You may be entitled to a grant for all or part of your fees as is in previous years. The amount of grant will depend on your household income. You could receive the following support:
- If your household income level is less than £23,085 you receive the full grant up to £1,255.
- If your household income level is £23,660 to £35,154 you receive partial tuition fee grant.
- If your household income level is over £35,155 you will not be entitled to any grant support.
Student Loans for tuition fee contributions
From September 2006, continuing students will not have to pay fees before they start university or while they are studying. Instead, you will be able to apply for a tuition fee loan to cover the difference between the total fee charged by the university (up to a maximum of £1,255)and the tuition fee grant awarded after means testing. For example:
Tuition fees - £1,255
Grant awarded after assessment of household income - £750
Payment due - £505
You can now apply for a tuition fee loan for £505. This means that your fees will be paid by a grant of £750 and a loan of £505. You will need to repay the loan once you finish your course and start work (earning over £15,000). You do not have to take out the loan for tuition fees if you or your sponsors wish to pay it for you.
Higher Education Grant
The Higher Education Grant is assessed on your family income and you do not have to repay the grant. Click on the link below to see further information about the Higher Education Grant.Higher education grant
