Welcome to Education and Learning

Educational psychology service
We promote learning, attainment and the
healthy emotional development of
children and young people aged 0 to 19
through the application of psychology.
We provide support for children and young people who have learning difficulties, behavioural difficulties, emotional problems and special educational needs. We also support children who are anxious, display temper tantrums or those who find it difficult to communicate.
We visit schools and assess pupils in the school environment, for example, by observation in classrooms or the playground. We also use standardised psychometric tests and measures as well as talking to parents, teachers and others who know the child well.
The frequency of visits will vary from one area to the next, depending on the needs of children attending a particular school.
We work in partnership with other practitioners, including teachers, teaching assistants, therapists and paediatricians, as well as parents.

How can I access the service?
For pre-school and foundation stage children (up to and including reception age) referral is via the child development team. For children and young people above foundation stage, referral is via your child's school.
We do not operate an open referral service. If you are concerned about your child, you should contact your child's teacher. The school may then request a consultation on your behalf.
What support do you provide for parents and teachers?
We provide training for teachers and other school staff, governors and parent groups on a wide range of issues. For example, effective behaviour management techniques, organising courses and workshops for teachers on issues such as bullying, stress management and learning difficulties. Our work is about helping others to understand children's difficulties more thoroughly so that schools can provide more effective teaching, support and care.
