Area support teams

Area support teams offers support and advice to children and young people who may have problems with their development - whether it be physical, emotional or intellectual.

The teams are made up of educational psychologists, social workers, access and inclusion staff, learning support staff, sensory impairment teachers, teaching assistants and behaviour and educational support workers.

How does each group work?

  • Educational psychologists work with children and young people from 0 to 19 with a range of social, emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties. They offer consultation and advice to children, young people their parents and schools.
  • Educational social workers work with children and young people aged between 3 to 16 who present a range of social, emotional and behavioural difficulties both at school and at home. They offer support and advice to children young people and their families.
  • Access and inclusion staff work with children and young people aged between 3 and 16 years with a range of emotional and behavioural difficulties. They support and advise schools, individuals and their families. They offer one to one and small group work, as well as whole class, and whole school involvement.
  • Specialist Learning Support teachers and teaching assistants work in mainstream schools to support the inclusion of children with a range of learning difficulties. They offer assessments, individual and small group work for pupils as well as consultancy, advice and training for staff and parents.
  • Sensory Impairment teachers and teaching assistants Work with children and young people with a range of visual and hearing difficulties from the age 0 to 16 years. They offer specialised assessment, support and advice to schools, individuals and their families. The teaching assistants provide individual support for some pupils with a sensory impairment in the educational setting.
  • Behaviour and Educational Support workers provide a range of behavioural interventions for children and young people and their families. They work extensively with pupils of school age and their families. Their work is mainly with groups of pupils and individuals but some programmes focus on whole class or whole school approaches.
