Using home language to help your child

If you have little or no spoken English it is important to encourage your childs literacy development by reading books and telling stories in your home language.

The following hints and tips may help you:

  • Draw pictures
  • Write stories
  • Write letters to grandparents and other family members who still live in your home country
  • If your family or friends still live in your home country ask them to send newspapers or other print materials so you can read them with your child
  • Talk with your child about work, values, religion and daily activities
  • Make everyday activities a learning experience e.g. sorting mail, sorting socks, shopping with lists etc
  • Widen your child's world through learning in the community e.g. touching animals at the zoo, crunching leaves, taking the bus etc
  • Take your child to community events and activities for families
  • Ask your child what they are learning in the classroom
