Registration of buildings for civil marriages

Civil Wedding venues may include restaurants, hotels and civic buildings.

If you want your premises licensed to hold civil weddings you must:

  • fill in an application form;
  • enclose a fee of £890.00 to cover the cost of approval for a period of three years; (cheques should be made payable to Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council)
  • note that if your application is unsuccessful the fee will not be refunded.
After the inspection has been received, the applicant or the responsible person will be contacted to arrange an inspection of the premises.

Knowsley currently has five venues that have been licensed for civil marriage:

  • Knowsley Hall (email events@knowsley.com)
  • The Huyton Suite
  • The Village Hotel and Leisure Club (visit website)
  • Millbrook Manor (visit website)
  • Suites Hotels/Knowsley (visit website)

Public notice

Before approval, it is the responsibility of the applicant to place a public notice in a weekly newspaper, to give the public a chance to make any objections. A period of 21 days must be allowed for any objections to be made.

Once this has been done, a copy of the notice, together with the name of the newspaper and the date of its publication, should be sent to the Licensing Section, Corporate and Customer Services Department, Knowsley MBC, Municipal Buildings, Huyton, Knowsley, Merseyside, L36 9YU.

Planning permission

If applicants are in any doubt about whether planning permission is required, they must contact their local planning authority before completing the application form.

Arranging the marriage ceremony

A Superintendent Registrar and Registrar must attend on the day of the marriage to conduct the ceremony and register the marriage. Any couple who wish to marry in approved premises must contact the register office to arrange the attendance of the registrars and costs involved. More information on the requirement and the legal preliminaries to civil marriages will be sent with the grant of approval.
