The Knowsley Register Office holds all birth and death records for the sub- districts of Prescot and Huyton.

If you are tracing a person or need a copy of any birth or death certificates you need to write to us, enclosing a cheque for £7.00 payable to Knowsley MBC and send a first class stamped addressed envelope. We try to have certificates in the post by the end of the next working day after we receive your request.

You need to inform us of:

• The name of the person, (including previous names)
• Place of event
• Year the event took place.

Marriages

Our marriage records include the Church of England registers for those churches within the current Knowsley MBC area. We also have all of the registrar attended marriages for the old registration district of Prescot (pre 1935). These registers contain marriages in Roman Catholic and other non-conformist churches and the Register Office.

St Catherine's Index

If you are searching for a birth, death or marriage on the St Catherine’s index, you will find that an event that took place in St Helens, Rainford or Widnes will appear on the index as the Prescot registration district. It will help if you can quote a General Register Office/St Catherine’s index reference number. However, it is worth stressing that the reference on the GRO index is relevant to General Register Office searches but does not apply to the records we hold as they are indexed differently.

You can only obtain copies from the register office where the register is held. Unfortunately we cannot obtain certificates from other offices for you, you will need to write directly to the office in question.

We will do our utmost to make sure we direct you to the correct office, however, due to boundary changes over the years we cannot always be sure exactly which office covered which area at the time.
