Asylum seekers

Asylum Seekers are people who flee their home country and seek refuge in another, possibly because of war or human rights abuses.

Asylum Seekers are not allowed to take up employment while their applications are being processed, but they are encouraged to do voluntary work.

The agency responsible for addressing issues of Asylum Seeker and Refugee settlement in England is called National Asylum Seekers Services (NASS). They obtain local based contracts with Councils around the country, which have dispersal allocations made by the home office.

Knowsley do not have a contract with NASS and there appears to be no moves to have such dispersal activity in the borough. Anyone presenting themselves as an asylum seeker or refugee would be referred to the Refugee Action Project in Liverpool.
