Trading standards

Knowsley Council's trading standards team are responsible for
enforcing a range of laws on areas such as:
- Enforcing legislation controlling the quantity, quality, price,
description, and safety of most goods and services.
- Enforcing and monitoring metrological controls on weighing and
measuring equipment, goods and services.
- Inspecting and sampling to ensure that a wide range of consumer
goods comply with safety standards.
- Monitoring the pricing of goods and services to ensure the
price indication is not misleading.
- Inspecting, examine and testing goods and services to make sure
they conform to their description.
- Ensuring customers are not misled when buying goods and
services, and ensuring customers do not fall foul of fraudulent
trade practices.
- Supervising and controlling Consumer Credit licensing and
monitoring/inspecting all those involved in credit lending
including advertising and other claims.
- Promoting an effective Trading Standards and Consumer Advice
Service which is accessible to the community. (In partnership with
Consumer Direct North West, we provide free advice and assistance
to consumers experiencing difficulties with goods and
services.)
- Investigating civil and criminal complaints about goods and
services.
- Working in partnership with other agencies to promote all the
services provided.
- Carrying out test purchasing to ensure that age restricted
product legislation is complied with.
The trading standards team can also inspect trade premises
within Knowsley to ensure they are compliant with laws.
