What are the benefits of a Smoke-Free Workplace?

The benefits of going smoke-free include:

  • Increased productivity
  • Reduced sickness and absence
  • Healthier workforce
  • Improved staff morale
  • A positive, responsible and healthy image projected by the company
  • No need for expensive ventilation systems
  • Compliance with future legislation
  • Reduced risk of litigation for failing to protect staff from exposure
Under the new legislation, employers and managers will be responsible for ensuring that all enclosed and substantially enclosed parts of the premises are smoke-free, and will face substantial penalties for non- compliance. People smoking in your premises may also be subject to Fixed Penalty Notices.

Displaying adequate signage to inform people of the no-smoking policy will also be a legal requirement under the new law.

In Scotland and Ireland the compliance rates with these laws are reported to be above 95%, and fears about mass dissention have appeared to be unfounded as support for the ban grows quickly following its implementation . Why Wait?

There are many businesses already smoke- free in Knowsley and who have received the National Clean Air Award.

The experiences of businesses that have gone smoke-free ahead of legislation in other parts of the world has shown that this is beneficial for business. Costa Coffee found that their coffee houses performed better than their rivals in Scotland during the post implementation period. They believe that this is because they had already secured their smoke-free customer base before the legislation came into force.

There are good examples of businesses that have gone smoke-free already and found great benefits to the health of their staff, and who have benefited financially. See our business case studies section for more information.

It makes good business sense to prepare your customers for these changes now.

Are You Ready?

If you are already smoke-free, or are in a position to go smoke-free now, please let us know. It is intended that there will be an inspection programme to support this legislation. Providing us with this information will allow us to target our advice and support prior to the legislation coming into force and will be of great benefit in determining where these inspections are most required.

If you would like further support in becoming smoke-free or would like some advice on this or any other issue concerning secondhand smoke in the workplace, please complete the online registration form and let us know what support you need.
