Final guidance and signage

The final guidance on the smoke-free provisions of the Health Act 2006 is now available.
Guidance, signage and supporting materials to help you prepare for the new smoke-free law can be downloaded below or ordered from the Smoke Free England website.

For specific advice on the application of the law to your business, please feel free to contact Knowsley Council's Environmental Health and Consumer Protection on 0151 443 4723.

Guidance
The 'Everything you need' guide is available to download below. This explains everything businesses and organisations need  to prepare for the new smoke-free law and will be included in the full guidance pack being mailed to businesses in April from the Department of Health.

If you require a hard copy of the 'Everything you need' guide and have not received this in the post by mid May, please email orders@smokefreeengland.co.uk  or call the smoke-free England information line on 0800 169 169 7. Additional formats of the 'Everything you need' guide and individuals leaflet, such as large print and braille, are also available on request.

Signage
All smoke-free premises and vehicles will need to display no-smoking signs. Signs will make it clear which premises and vehicles are smoke-free and demonstrate that you are taking the necessary steps to meet the requirements of the new law. For further details see the guidance documents above.  Alternatively you can order print-ready signs for your business from the Smoke Free England website.

Criteria for printing formats
It is possible that your printer may automatically resize the following images. Make sure that your page scaling printer setting is set to 'none' and check that the printed format meets the following criteria:

  • Smoke-free premises sign must be at least A5 in area (210mm x 148mm).
  • The international no-smoking symbol* in both signs must be at least 70mm in diameter.

* The international no-smoking symbol consists solely of a graphic representation of a single burning cigarette enclosed in a red circle of at least 70mm in diameter with a red bar across it.

You are free to design and print your own no-smoking signs as long as they meet the minimum requirements. These can be personalised by changing the words 'these premises' to refer to the name or type of premises, for example, 'this gym', 'this salon' or 'this restaurant'. Some examples can be downloaded below, but you are also free to design your own.

Bilingual versions
The following bilingual versions of the smoke-free premises signs are also available.

Supporting materials
The council recommends that all businesses introduce an appropriate no smoking policy in their premises and work vehicles, to make sure that employees are aware of the new law and that they now work in a smoke-free environment. It will also advise them on what they need to do to comply with the new law. Download the model no smoking policy (PDF 29KB)

Anyone in charge of smoke-free premises and vehicles will need to be prepared to take action if someone smokes in an enclosed or substantially enclosed area. This flowchart suggests reasonable steps that could be taken to deal with smoking in any smoke-free premises or vehicle.
