If you’d like to attach something to a lamppost to promote an event or raise awareness of important information, you will need permission from the council. This is known as a S178 Licence.
Examples of lamppost attachments include:
- Fire hydrant signs
- Bus stops and timetables
- Special event signage
- Directions to an event
- Neighbourhood Watch signs
- Blind persons referencing points
- Police notices
- Police surveillance cameras and similar equipment
You will need to pay a non-refundable administration fee with your licence application. The cost will depend on the number of attachments you wish to display:
- One to five attachments: £177
- Six to 20 attachments: £236
- 21 to 50 attachments: £295
- 51+ attachments: to be agreed based upon quantity and detail

You should receive a response within 15 days of your application being received.
Paying for the licence
You will need to enclose a cheque for the correct amount with your completed application form. Please make cheques payable to Knowsley MBC.
Fitting the attachment
You can fit the attachments yourself as long as you have a valid S178 Licence and insurance to cover accidental damage that may be caused when fitting the attachments.
An individual quote can be provided if you would like the council to fit attachments.
