Juinior swimming FAQs

1. How do I enrol my child?

Contact one of the centres and complete an enquiry form. Your child will then be placed on the waiting-list.

2. How long is the waiting-list?

The waiting-list can vary in length and is also dependant on the ability of the child. Please ask at reception for the current situation at the pool you wish to swim at.

3. At what age can children start?

We have pre-school lessons from the age of 3 during the daytime and after school. Term-time swimming lessons begin at the age of 4 years.

4. When are the lessons?

The lessons are throughout the week after school and on a Saturday. Depending upon the ability, the child will be placed in the appropriate lesson.

5. What if the time isn’t suitable?

If you can’t make the lesson time, please tell reception as soon as possible. We will then put your child on an adjustment list to see if there is space available when it is suitable for you. There is a cut-off date by which parents must re-enrol, so after this date the spaces that are free will be available to other children. We cannot guarantee that we will be able to find you a suitable time for your child’s ability.

6. How long do the lessons last?

Lessons last for 30 minutes.

7. How much do the lessons cost?

Please check with reception for the most up-to-date costs. Lessons are payable in full at enrolment before the term begins.

8. How many children are in each class?

For stages 1,2,3 and 4 the maximum number of children in each class is eight and 12 for stages 5 and above.

9. Who are the instructors?

We have different instructors on different days. All teachers are highly qualified to ASA standard Levels 1 and 2, in teaching swimming. All teachers will work with your children and assess their ability to achieve their best.

10. Can I watch?

Yes, there is a spectators’ gallery in the leisure centres. Please get your child changed and take them through to the poolside, and leave them. Please be on the poolside one minute before the lesson is due to end to collect your child.

11. What awards will they get?

Knowsley Council has adopted the National Plan for Teaching Swimming
(NPTS). This plan has a range of levels and progresses your child through each level. Beginners start on stage 1 and work their way through each level.

12. Will they get a certificate?

After your child has been assessed at a level, they will be awarded a badge and certificate.
Please be aware, your child will only pass the level if they have completed all of the skills to the correct standard, determined by their teacher.

13. How do I re-enrol onto the next set of lessons?

Two weeks prior to the end of the block of lessons, you will be handed a letter asking whether you want to re-enrol. On the letter will be the pay-by date. To ensure your place, please call into the centre and pay in full for the next term. Failure to re-enrol could result in being removed from the lessons and your place being taken by another child.

14. What if I miss the pay-by date?

If you miss the date, please contact us as soon as possible. After the pay by date, we fill the lessons with other children. If your space is still available, you just need to pay. If your space has gone, we will try to find you a suitable alternative. We cannot guarantee that we will be able to find you a suitable class, so please make sure you pay on time.

15. What if my child isn’t a complete beginner?

If you want your child to attend swimming lessons but are unsure of what level they should be enrolled into, we may be able to arrange an assessment which lasts approximately 5-10 minutes.
